Here is a thing people constantly get wrong, so let’s nail it down.
The 6666 passed through FOUR generations, not three:
- Burk Burnett, the founder.
- His son, Tom Burnett.
- His granddaughter, Anne Burnett Tandy, known as “Miss Anne.”
- His GREAT-granddaughter, Anne Burnett Marion.
If you ever see Burk called Anne Marion’s “grandfather,” that is wrong. He was her great-grandfather. A whole generation, Tom, keeps getting dropped, even by real estate write-ups that should know better.
Now, the fun part: the horses.
“Miss Anne” Burnett Tandy (yes, she married into the Tandy / RadioShack family) helped organize the American Quarter Horse Association in the 1940s, and the 6666 became a serious horse operation. But the program hit legendary status under her daughter, Anne Marion, who took over in 1980.
In the early 1990s, Marion’s team pulled off a move that stunned the entire Quarter Horse world: the ranch stood THREE of the greatest racing stallions alive at the same time. Dash For Cash, Special Effort, and Streakin Six, all standing at one ranch.
Dash For Cash alone was a two-time world champion who won 21 of 25 starts and became one of the most influential sires in the breed’s history. The ranch’s main road in Guthrie is literally named Dash for Cash Road.
The Four Sixes racked up the AQHA Best Remuda Award, was named an AQHA Racing Champion Breeder, and stands as an all-time leading breeder. Today it still stands more than 40 stallions.
Anne Marion was not just a rancher. She ran Burnett Oil, founded the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, and was a major art collector. For 40 years, she was the 6666.
Then, in February 2020, she died, and the next chapter shocked everybody.
Next in Part 4: the will that ordered the ranch SOLD, the eye-watering price tag, and the Hollywood name who bought a piece of the Old West.
