Texas Public Information Act: A Practical Guide to Your Right to Government Records

By The Alliance Gazette | July 1, 2026

In Texas, government records belong to you — and you never have to explain why you want them. The Texas Public Information Act presumes every public record is open unless the law says otherwise. Our new guide walks through the whole process: what you can request, what the government has to do, what it costs, and what happens when records are withheld. A few things worth knowing: ✔️ You do not have to give a reason for your request.

✔️ Requests of 50 pages or fewer cannot be charged labor or overhead — just copy costs. ✔️ Inspecting records in person is usually free. ✔️ As of 2025, an agency has to tell you in writing within 10 business days if it has no records. Full guide below.
